Maui and his brothers traveled to the eastern edge of the earth, where the sun rises each day. They built a large net out of woven flax ropes and hid in a pit, waiting for the sun to rise. As soon as the sun appeared, they threw the net over it and trapped it, holding it in place until the sun promised to move more slowly across the sky and give them longer days. Maui and his brothers eventually released the sun, but not before teaching it a lesson about moving too quickly and causing the days to be too short.
