Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451. He is best known for his voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, which led to the discovery of the Americas in 1492. Columbus was commissioned by the Spanish monarchs, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, to find a new route to Asia by sailing west.

During his first voyage, Columbus landed in the Bahamas and later explored the islands of Cuba and Hispaniola (present-day Dominican Republic and Haiti). He made four total voyages to the Americas and is credited with opening up the New World to European exploration and colonization.
